Pair who preyed on 14-year-old left trail of evidence

A SCHOOLMASTER from West Yorkshire who took photographs of himself and a former colleague molesting a 14-year-old boy has been jailed for 20 months.

John Foxley, 54, and fellow teacher Shaun Tyler, 37, preyed on the teenager a decade ago but left a damning trail of evidence which eventually helped police find the victim.

Detectives traced Foxley, a former head of department at Lyndhurst School, Borehamwood, Hertfordshire, after busting a paedophile ring dealing in copies of some of the sickening photos he took.

In 1999 Foxley, of Garsdale Walk, Knottingley, West Yorkshire, was jailed for three years for a string of crimes including assisting in the sexual abuse of another 14 year-old-boy and taking indecent photographs of children.

But the long-running Operation Seaborg identified at least five more victims and the teachers’ activities can now be reported for the first time.

Tyler, who met Foxley while working at the Buckswood Grange International School in Uckfield, East Sussex, in the late 1980s, was jailed for nine months last year.

As Foxley was jailed for 20 months police appealed for any other victims of the pair to come forward. Foxley admitted three counts of indecent assault, seven counts of taking indecent photographs of children and one count of distribution between June 1, 1979, and April 28, 1996.

Sentencing him at Middlesex Guildhall Crown Court, Judge Paul Worsley said: “You fall to be sentenced for offences of indecency relating to young boys at a school where you were head of geography.”

Foxley had also taken secret photographs of two teenage boys bathing naked while resident master at the Bracondale School in Norwich. The boarding school has since closed.

The teacher was first snared in 1999 following an anti-paedophile investigation into two south Yorkshire health workers, Gary Taylor, 46, and Christopher Marsh, 50, both formerly of Sheffield Road, Barnsley.

Wayne Cranston-Morris, prosecuting, said: “Information was received they had a substantial amount of material including indecent photographs of children, which they intended to distribute.”

He said police followed them to an address in Nottingham, when they went in they found three men sat in front of a computer, examining indecent images of children.

Nearly 6,000 indecent photos, some featuring Taylor, Marsh and Foxley, had been saved to two disks. When gay lovers Taylor and Marsh were interviewed they described how they made friends with Foxley on the internet after becoming bored with their relationship.

They visited Foxley at his Borehamwood home and the teacher drove them to secluded woods outside Luton in Bedfordshire to meet another boy who had severe learning difficulties.

The prosecutor added: “At the time of the offences the defendant was head of geography at a school in Borehamwood and using the school’s digital camera he photographed the boy with Taylor and Marsh committing indecent acts with him.”

Mr Cranston-Morris told how Tyler and Foxley repeatedly abused the 14-year-old boy after renewing their old friendship in 1996.

Tyler, formerly of Buntingford, Hertfordshire, had met the youngster in a Stevenage hairdressers before taking him home to assault him as Foxley took photographs.

The boy had hidden a series of Polaroid shots which Foxley had given him in 1996 in his loft, and his parents stumbled across them.

Tyler, who has dual British and American nationality, emigrated to the USA in 1997. He was extradited to England last year and jailed for for his role in the affair.

Speaking after the court hearing Det Insp Ian Hughes said: “These two men have abused the position of trust they have had as teachers and we have proved between them they have been responsible for the sexual abuse of at least five further boys.”

He said anyone who was abused by the men could call him on confidentially on 020 7230 5928.

Teacher preyed on boys at his home

A DEPRAVED teacher used his Cottered home as a base to prey on boys, the Mercury can now reveal.

Reporting restrictions were lifted this week on Shaun Tyler, 37, who was jailed last May for just nine months after being convicted of a string of sex offences involving children.

Detectives have now urged other victims of Tyler to come forward.

Details of the former Warren Lane resident’s crimes were withheld until his paedophile partner, teacher John Foxley, 54, was jailed for 20 months on Monday. Foxley took photographs of the pair molesting a 14-year-old boy.

Det Insp Ian Hughes, of the Met police, was in charge of the investigation.

He told the Mercury: “Tyler lived in the isolated cottage for many years. We believe it belonged to his family, and although he emigrated to America in 1997, he still owned it.

“He has dual nationality and, after serving his sentence here, he has been taken back to the US to face other charges.

“Unfortunately we believe there may well be other victims of these men who we haven’t been able to identify.”

The sick duo preyed on the teenager a decade ago but left a damning trail of evidence which led police to the victim.

They repeatedly abused the 14-year-old boy after renewing their old friendship in 1996.

Tyler had met the youngster in a Stevenage hair salon before taking him to the cottage where he indecently assaulted him as Foxley took photographs.

The boy hid a series of Polaroid shots in his loft, which Foxley had given him in 1996, until his parents stumbled across them.

Detectives traced Foxley, a former head of department at Lyndhurst School in Borehamwood, after busting a paedophile ring dealing in some of the sick photos he took.

In 1999, Foxley was jailed for three years for assisting in the sexual abuse of another 14-year-old boy and taking indecent photographs of children.

But the long-running investigation identified at least five more victims and the teacher’s depraved activities can now be reported for the first time.

Tyler met Foxley while working at the Buckswood Grange International School in Uckfield, East Sussex, in the late 1980s.

Foxley was first snared in 1999 following an anti-paedophile investigation into two south Yorkshire health workers, Gary Taylor, 46, and Christopher Marsh, 50.

Gay lovers Taylor and Marsh described how they made friends with Foxley on the internet after becoming bored with their relationship.

They visited Foxley and drove to secluded woods outside Luton in Beds to meet another boy, who had severe learning difficulties.

Tyler, now of Illinois, USA, pleaded guilty to two counts of indecently assaulting a boy. The remaining counts relating to the indecent photographs were withdrawn.

The detective urged any of Tyler’s victims to come forward and call him confidentially on 0207 7230 5928.
