The Judd School, Tonbridge, Kent
A FORMER teacher at a leading Tonbridge school has been jailed for five years for molesting one of his students.
Kevin Copestake, who taught PE and history at The Judd School, in Brook Street, was jailed for five years this week following a Maidstone Crown Court hearing.
The 61-year-old admitted three charges of indecent assault and one of indecency with a child involving a Judd schoolboy, who felt “powerless to say no” to his teacher.
Copestake also pleaded guilty to one count of inciting a boy to watch a sexual act. He was a teacher at a school in West Sussex at the time.
Although they happened more than 30 years ago, justice finally caught up with Copestake, who now lives in Norfolk.
Judge Michael Carroll compared Copestake’s initial denials to the allegations and final guilty plea to the original denials of sex abuse by disgraced BBC broadcaster Stuart Hall.
Judge Carroll added: “He lied to the police.”
The court heard that Copestake suggested he give his pupil extra tuition at his flat in Tunbridge Wells.
Prosecuting, Daniel Fugallo said the boy was shown pornographic magazines and he abused him when they had a bath together.
Copestake had also invited another boy to his flat, had shown him pornography and had encouraged him to perform a sex act on himself. The matters were reported to police but no action taken.
