    Woolton Vale, Menlove Avenue, Liverpool

Woolton Vale/ Menlove Avenue children’s home was investigated as part of a large police investigation named operation Care. Many former residents have made allegations of physical and sexual abuse against staff members. Convictions were secured.

That is excellent, thank you, exactly what we are looking for.
      Will get it published asap.

I’m looking into Ralph Morris and a man who was a social worker called Norman Wainwright. I’m wondering if wainwright had dealings with woolton vale in regards to placements. Any info regarding these two would be greatly appreciated.

    • FRANK SAGE

I WAS AN INMATE AT WOOLTON VALE IN THE 1950S AND WAS SUBJECTED TO BOTH PHYSICAL AND SEXUAL ABUSE BY THE OFFICERS THERE, NOBODY LISTENED TO ME WHEN I TRIED TO GET HELP, I STILL SUFFER FROM THE RESULTS OF THE PHYSICAL ABUSE I RECIEVED THERE.

Wimbrick Hey is a home which has been the subject of complaints of abuse. Jordans are currently working on cases relating to this home.

Sorry – I’m working from W’s backwards – bit random, and hope my geography is up to it.:)

Again, thank you, I cannot tell you how much it helps.
      Can we clone you?!

      • WW

:) Not sure TpTb like my sort at all……….. cloning might give them a massive problem – so yep – I’m up for that.
Will just plough backwards thro alphabet and post what I can find readily. Hopefully that gives some data to work from – then it’s a case of more in-depth to try and cross ref the trickier ones. Others are working from ‘A’, so hopefully we’ll meet in the middle.
Thx for all you are doing at the needleblog
        Big hugs.

Derwent House Residential Assessment Centre, Old Swan; Liverpool City Council.
2 separate convictions which Came to light as part of Merseyside Police’s Operation Care.
Former Merseyside care worker and supervisor, 50 year old Gail Stack, was jailed for six years on 28/02/2000 after being convicted of seven charges of indecent assault and one of indecency with a child, abusing girls of 12, 14 and 15 in her care between 1974 – 1978.(Released 2004). Judge Ian Crompton remarked “They were particularly nasty assaults. These girls were very young and in particularly difficult circumstances. They were disturbed children through no fault of their own and they had the heartbreak of being taken from their homes and placed in a children’s home supposedly in the care of social services.”
In August 2000 further charges were brought against former police officer and care home manager Kenneth MacKreth, found guilty of 33 rape and sexual abuse charges against girls aged between 14 and 16,
    spanning four years from 1972.

Part of Lancashire police investigation into abuse of vulnerable girls from care homes by Asian men in the north west.
‘Claire’ now 27, alleges she was subject to horrific abuse by predatory paedophiles hanging around the homes’ gates and care workers turned a blind eye to her complaints..
Given morning after pill after being found naked and battered in field. Echoes the findings of a report into a sex ring in Rochdale, which highlighted “missed opportunities” to halt abuse. Links to Lancashire care homes also.

This references St Aidan’s in Widnes and also St Vincent’s in Formby, which does not appear elsewhere in the lists. They were both part of the Roman Catholic Nugent Care society.

    St Aidan’s and St Vincent’s.
    Both in Liverpool. Now closed.

“One of the longest-running legal cases in UK history, centred on systemic sexual abuse at children’s homes in the north-west of England, is poised to end after a judge found in favour of two men who claimed they had been sexually assaulted while in care.

A judgment handed down in the high court on Friday determined that the men had been abused while in the care of the Nugent Care Society, formerly Catholic Social Services, in Liverpool. It also cast doubt on the testimony by two former staff members at the homes who had denied the men’s claims.

The allegations centred on sexual abuse between 1968 and 1982 at two children’s homes for juvenile offenders, St Aidan’s and St Vincent’s, both in Liverpool, which have now closed.

The homes became notorious following high-profile court cases in the mid-1990s that resulted in criminal convictions for a number of paedophiles who had worked at them”.

Woolton Vale assessment centre, otherwise known as Menlove. It was a large, Victorian prison with bars on every window, locks on every door and an isolation cell inside. It had previously operated as a remand home for prisoners. In 1974 it had been converted to an assessment centre for kids, but still operated illegally under the old rules. Confinement might not have been permitted, but it didn’t stop them. Meanwhile, the local remand centre, Risley, was full, so Menlove became an overspill for prisoners. This meant they were mixing children from broken homes with hardened criminals – and locking them up.
