Ex-youth club leader jailed for string of sex attacks on boy in north London during 1970s

A former youth club leader was today jailed for 16 years for a string of sex attacks on a young boy in north London during the 1970s.

Colin Richell, 73, met his eight-year-old victim while working at a youth club at Devonshire Hill School in Haringey in 1972.

He went on to sexually abuse him over a six year period in attacks which “escalated in severity”, police said today.

Wood Green Crown Court heard how he repeatedly abused the boy at his home, holiday home and in his car.

The victim eventually reported Richell to police in 2013 and the case came to court in November last year.

Richell, of Grenoble Gardens, Palmers Green, denied 15 counts of buggery, indecent assault and gross indecency but was convicted following a trial.

Detective Constable Goode, who led the investigation, today said Richell may have abused other children, as he appealed for potential victims to speak to police.

He said: “Richell abused his position of trust and power to carry out systematic and sustained abuse on the victim, manipulating him to believe he had no way out of the situation.

“I commend the victim for his bravery in coming forward and reliving the horror of these offences before a jury.

“It is possible Richell has committed further offences and I would encourage anyone with information to contact my team.”

Palmers Green pensioner sentenced for historic sex abuse

A pensioner from Palmers Green has been jailed for sexually abusing a boy in the 1970s.

Former youth club leader Colin Richell, 73, of Grenoble Gardens, Palmers Green, was sentenced to 16 years in jail at Wood Green Crown court on Wednesday.

After pleading not guilty in November Richell was found guilty on Wednesday of 15 counts of buggery, indecent assault and gross indecency against the victim.

His victim was eight to nine years old when the abuse began in 1972 at a youth club run by Richell in the Devonshire Hill School in Haringey.

Over the next six years the abuse intensified and took place in Richell’s home as well as in his holiday home and in his car.

The victim reported the abuse to an outer London Police force in 2013 and it was then referred to the Child Abuse Investigation Team in Barnet.

After an investigation Richell was charged in August 2014.

Detective Constable Goode, from the Child Abuse Investigation Team, said: “Richell abused his position of trust and power to carry out systematic and sustained abuse on the victim, manipulating him to believe he had no way out of the situation.

“I commend the victim for his bravery in coming forward and reliving the horror of these offences before a jury.

“It is possible Richell has committed further offences and I would encourage anyone with information to contact my team on 0208 733 5039. To remain anonymous call Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.”
