Twins locked up for ‘chilling’ sex attacks

Written by Alice Hutton

Twin Mormon missionaries convicted of the “chilling” sexual abuse of the same young boy are now behind bars.
John Conway, 50, was sentenced at Cambridge Crown Court yesterday to six years in prison for four counts of indecent assault against the boy between 1979, when he was just seven years old, and 1986.
He had denied all the charges but was found guilty last month.
His identical twin brother Martyn Conway, who pleaded guilty, received concurrent three-year sentences for six indecent assaults on the child and another on a 15-year-old boy in 1994.
He is currently serving seven years after being  convicted in 2008 of eight indecency charges, including the rape and attempted rape of another boy, in the 1980s.
The new sentences will run consecutively to the seven years, meaning he will serve a total of 10 years.
Judge Anthony Bate told the court there was no alternative to an immediate custodial sentence for the “grave serial sexual abuse” by the two former Cambridge postmen, including bribing the first victim with sweets and presenting him with a priced “menu” of sexual activities.
The Mormon Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day Saints, on Cherry Hinton Road in the city, where the brothers first began competing to groom the boy, was a setting in which he should have felt safe, said Judge Bate.
He said: “The activities into which he had been inducted were some of the very worst and I cannot see it as anything less than chilling.
“Events have proved the accounts of good character I received have been proved false.
“The consecutive sentences must be given here for this quite distinct and grave serial sexual abuse of a young boy whom Martyn Conway had befriended in a setting of Christian trust and fellowship and who was groomed for his own and his brother’s selfish gratification.”
Roger Harrison, for Martyn Conway, said he had shown “great courage” after the shock of being convicted for “actions he took over 30 years ago.”
Mark Shelley argued his client John Conway was “no longer a danger to anyone.”
The offences against the now 37-year-old victim include hugging and kissing him, touching his genitals and other sexual acts.
During his trial, John Conway told the court his brother could have tricked the boy into thinking he was the attacker and that he had never been interested in young boys.
