  1. Brave man, how long do you think he lived after that picture appeared.

He’s not in a mob, he’s in a very structured setting. Braver than if he were in a mob, I reckon.

Another German with his arms crossed.

    • They hanged most of them later anyway for crimes against humanity.

      • Sabre

I know they did. I thought that the point was defiance.
100,000 to 150,000 Japanese vaporised and no Americans hung.
25,000 (go with the very low estimate) German civilians immolated by the UK no Brits hung.
You’re only a war criminal if you lose the war. Blair and Bush haven’t been held to account for 100,000 +

      • Paul Mac

Except anyone who the Allies deemed to be useful or just nice old blokes & who’s crimes were instantly forgotten (or accepted, or deemed irrelevant)…..Wernher von Braun, Arthur Rudolph, Hubertus Strughold, Kurt Heinrich Debus, Eberhard Rees, Kurt Waldheim……….

The problem seems to be the realisation of being in a mob.

    • Sabre

      Why is there a problem?
The picture is believed to have been taken in 1936, do you suppose that the people in the picture had time machines or a crystal ball?

in 2015 most of our population can’t tell their arse from their elbow let alone predict Economic and GeoPolitical consequences and we have instant worldwide communication the internet etc.

What will UK and US troops be doing in 2018? and 2024? what will the inflation rate be? what will the unemployment figures look like? What will the middle east position be ? will the Nato v Russia/Ukraine mess have been settled? will it be worse?
What will the disposition of ISIS be?

Will the Brittan files have been found yet?

Put an emotive picture up and get a Pavlovian response instead of a considered nuanced perspective !

Balls of steel August Landmesser. A Very famous and moving photo which I have seen many times before.

The photo was taken at the launch of a German army vessel in 1936, during a ceremony that was attended by Adolf Hitler himself. Within the picture a lone man stood with arms crossed as hundreds of men and women around him held up their arms in salute and allegiance to the Nazi Party and its leader, Adolph Hitler. Everyone in attendance is showing their undying support for Der Fuhrer by throwing out their very best “Sieg Heil.” August Landmesser, grimacing with arms crossed, stood strong and defiant as he showed his disapproval by not displaying support for the Nazi Party. What made this photo and Landmesser’s defiance unique is that it represented the protest of one man, in its most sincere and pure form. The source of Landmesser’s protest, like many great tragedies, starts with a love story.

      • Many thanks.

I didn’t realise there was so much known background.

      • Judging from the photos I’d say this may be a better candidate.

“A rival and far more convincing candidate has emerged in recent years, Wegert Gustav, who did work at the shipyard and who objected to Nazism on grounds of his Christian faith and who died in 1959, when Germany’s totalitarian nightmare was over. Beach has borrowed these two comparison photographs from the Gustav family’s site. The resemblance is striking.”

It’s a good picture to exemplify the text but……
he may have a sore shoulder, been asleep, not been a German speaker, put his arm up just after the shutter closed, or judging from his smile and distant stare, just smoked some dope and doesn’t give a sh1t.

if the mob is correct ….
if the mob is wrong …..
history is a very complex subject but current affairs is even more complex

i tend to work on the principle that most folk are quite stupid most of the time and usually they have been fooled or driven into activity for somebodies benefit if they are not happily at home eating buns or growing tomatoes or fishing or whatever they do for fun.

Precisely, after all there must be pictures of people rejoicing in 1979 at the news of Thatcher ‘rescuing the Nation’ in the wake of Labour and the Unions fighting each other to keep the lights out and the dead unburied, are the poor misguided fools one day going to be accused of being a party to ‘cabinet ministers raping and killing children’ ?

Conversely there must be pictures of people rejoicing in 1997 at the news of Blair ‘rescuing the Nation’ in the wake of Thatcherite monetarism gone feral, destruction of industries and communities and the imposition of the poll tax, are the poor misguided fools one day going to be accused of being a party to ‘Thatcherism by a nicer name’ topped off with illegal wars killing 100,000+ civilians not to mention the continued abuse of children by our ‘heroes’.

There must be pictures somewhere of some of the poor misguided fools rejoicing in 2010 when Wallace and Gromitt ‘rescued the Nation’ from the corrupt venal mendacious war criminal Blair ……

We’ve gone on at length for a couple of years on this blog bemoaning the fact that whoever we vote for, change, when and if it comes is rarely beneficial to the electorate but always beneficial to Global Corporates and powerful lobbies.

The average 30s German had to cope with hyper inflation, national humiliation, starvation and attempts to establish a German soviet, he of course unlike us wasn’t misled or fooled as we constantly are, we are to believe that he wanted mass slaughter on the eastern front, to be the inhuman pariah for a century to come, to have his family burned to death, his country divided by the communists for half a century ?

We are to believe that the Russian people couldn’t be fooled they wanted to live under a tyranny that murdered millions and enslaved them for 80 years?

Similar arguments hold for the Africans of Zimbabwe and South Africa and the whole continent from the med to the cape.

The man in the picture was probably protesting, not unreasonably, at the fact that his marriage was deemed illegal ( he married a Jewish woman ) , he wasn’t a Geopolital analyst that had seen the future.
