Why It’s Difficult For Any Group To Represent All Survivors Of Institutional Abuse

Capture

About 18 months ago The Needle Team set out to catalogue as many institutions and organisations where abuse is alleged or known to have taken place as we could.

We know we’ve only scratched the surface as we are still adding new institutions and we’re restricted to publicly available and well sourced information.

Those we have found are catalogued in Op Greenlight and the interactive ‘Brain’ which attempts to make links, including police operations PIE, and other offenders can be found HERE

Thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of survivors all with their own voice.

I don’t expect anyone to read the entire list but please just scroll down the list and see how long it is and remember, it’s the tip of the iceberg.

There are 610  Homes, Schools, Institutions or Organisations so far.

  1. Hi looking to trace anyone who was in st marys bishopbriggs glasgow in 1965

  2. Nicky Mason aka Nigel Robert Thomson

I was physically assaulted by Tom glowczyk, Phil Webster, Barry giggs and Graham FeedBurner at Ellindon school from 1982-1984. I was a resident and then became a day boarder. Crow Pecks is when we were hit on the head with a clenched fist. Buckles first. Tom glowczyk was the one who started this and Barry giggs and Grant long also did this.

  3. sandrina taylor

would just like to mention 21 bryn heulog..trehebert..family unit home…run by the cruelest women in the rhondda valleys….preswylfa in 1974…and silverbrook treatment centre for girls…run under the regime of barbara morris……at least half of the care staff should be in prison!!!

  4. linda Hennessy

I was in a children’s home in Dulwich- London WHERE PETER HICKMAN was in charge. He was a cruel pervert.

  5. Manda

Having found it within me to do something about the abuse I suffered whilst in care where do I go now?
I was in 3 of these homes and was isolated because of my behaviour. Prime fucking target

  6. Jake

Victims’ groups need to insist on *multiple, regional inquiries.* The extent of this affair renders it entirely NOT suitable for a single, over-arching Inquiry. Not suitable at all.
Plus a single Inquiry is far too easily manipulated, bringing together as it does, hundreds and hundreds of individual cases under one authority. Whoever heads-up that Inquiry is too easily nobbled – even if they begin in good faith – resulting in a guaranteed, all-encompassing, nationwide whitewash (again).

  7. One last food for thought. While we play in their sand box – OSA is stopping this. Or panel not vetted yet to receive confidential information etc – Know it is all a bunch of BS.

Has everyone forgotten that Andy Coulson was never fully vetted, or cleared and yet he sat in on and was briefed as if he was. Obviously, these rules are there for US not them, and we need to call BS when they use such excuses.

  8. GW

Have you passed your suggestions to those whom it concerns?

I think my suggestions concern all involved. this blog can still push for the inquiry to go ahead, while at the same time mount a loud offensive.

It beggars belief that cops have come out saying they were prevented from investigating, and yet we do not know the names of those that did this. christ for all we know the cops that stopped the investigations could still be in important police positions today – heck they could be overseeing some of these investigations. It is time to demand the police NAME who told them to stop. Name them not next year, but now.

It is time the police involved in EGH prosecution be NAMED and asked to explain what happened to the files.

It is time for those with the power to seal Castle’s files be named and asked why.

It is time that labour and the former MP for Chester be asked if it is true they made a deal over Morrison’ s seat.

and so on. I am sure this blog can think of even more fine tuned questions that people can get behind, and are questions that will further crack this wide open, and show those in charge that they are not in control.

Or alternatively, we can just spin wheels reacting to is/will there be a real inquiry and go nowhere.

  9. colin

Let’s not forget the murders at dumblane school rip the wee poor souls

  10. South Shore Academy Blackpool [formerly Palatine]: Two teachers. One a deputy head – Derek Farrand, the other a female drama teacher – Caroline French – who I had an enormous problem with regarding her obsession with homosexuality when my children were at the school & before the truth came out. Both jailed.

  11. the question you need to ask is when is it a good time to tell govt ENOUGH. two years plus since Tom raised the questions. 2, and many months of failed chairs. and 50 plus years of cover up.

Yet, you think they in govt should be given more time? that those who have been ignored for too long should not push so hard. After all they are just a handful of the total abused.

I guess the question that I think you should address given the stance you have taken is when should the govt be told ‘we have no faith in you’. I see you suggest wait until a chair is appointed. In other words give those in power, who have done everything in their power to cover this up, just a little bit longer.

I challenge you to ponder and perhaps blog about what so far has been the only TRUTH. those in power have no interest in exposing it. If that is so, and thus your govt, regardless of its makeup will fail and undermine you – can you share with us what your plan B is. Do you have one? I think your plan B deserves a write up. Maybe that is what people can rally behind, should Plan A – give govt more time- fail

    • Andy Barnett

Tricia, I’m sure everyone on this blog can sympathise with your words. I think we all know there are people in positions of power that have no interest in exposing the coverup and every interest in frustrating this or any other inquiry.

My worry is what happens if people don’t cooperate. If what you say is true, why would those in power suddenly change their minds and give us the fair and robust inquiry we want? They wouldn’t – they would simply use this as a means of finishing it off or kicking it into the long grass. End result – they win, we lose.

Far more likely is that there are some people in authority (MPs, Police, Security, Judiciary) that want to uncover the truth and there are some that don’t. So we have to decide who we can trust is on our side and give them the support they need to see this through.

For me, the 7 MPs that campaigned for this inquiry – in particular Tim Watson, Simon Danczuk and Zac Goldsmith – are the key people we should be supporting, which includes listening to what they tell us. I don’t believe any of them are telling survivors not to cooperate with the inquiry. What they are doing instead is working with Theresa May to help her get the inquiry right.

I also note that all 7 MPs (to my knowledge) have spoken of their trust in Theresa May – not that she is doing all the right things, but that she is one of those that wants to get to the truth. My worry is that she may have only 6 months left as Home Secretary and whoever takes her place -Tory or Labour – may not be as keen on establishing an effective inquiry as she is.

      • gw

        ^Agreed

I spoke to one of the MP’s mention (I will avoid naming as to preserve a semblance of pseudo-anonymity) who said that despite being cynical, they were optimistic for the future.

This is the only chance, lets not foul it up.

      • I respect what you say, but wonder if you realize how powerless it sounds. In other words what you are saying is we know most want this covered up but some do not and we should work with them, as it is our only hope.

My point is if the only hope we have is getting those in power to do something then we do not have a democracy – not that I thought we did. If the only option to get to the truth is to depend on those in power to do the right thing, well it is not looking good. Hence why I asked what is Plan B? Because I think it is time we start discussing this. If the people go on the offensive, I suspect the tree will start to really shake.

Yes, I know there are some good MP’s but they too have made little progress. For starters police have come forward and said they were told to shut investigations down. Why at the very least do we not know WHO told them. OSA as a reason – it is nonsense – If I were an MP I would demand the police give up names. If they did, I think we would see some more cracks as those that stopped investigations try to explain why? in a similar vein, John Mann should not be asking who sealed Castle’s files? he should state who has the power to do such a thing – and then demand they answer. It is obvious that few have such a power, so name them, put them in the spotlight and let’s see what happens. same with Zac stating EGH files destroyed. Again, he should name who had the files – not a blanket statement such as Met police, but a more targeted statement. Eg, these police officers were in charge of prosecuting EGH owners – they need to come forward and say what happened to the files. Name and shame

These MP’s could also demand answers to several questions about John Allen. They could demand, and force the police to answer – what is being done about the money trail etc. Again, a focused and highly published letter from MP’s to NWP demanding answers to certain questions will also create more cracks. Third, given the widespread abuse in care homes, they could a) make a huge stink about the amount of taxpayers money has been used to put kids in homes where they have been brutally abused, b) obvious the corruption is rife within the SS, courts and police dealing with these children, c) given that put the fear of god in these people by letting them know the system will be radically changed, and harsh prison terms will be given to anyone working for SS etc who is found to be involved in cover ups, and corruption.

these are just a few suggestions, but I think if they were followed a lot more cracks would start to appear? If I have thought of this then the question needs to be asked of those MP’s fighting to get the truth out, why they have not started to turn up the heat in a way that does not undermine the inquiry, but does put those trying to block it on notice that they do not hold all the cards.

  14. sad to see that St Christopher`s Railway Servants Orphanage still not on any list for abuse against children!

    • 'greenlight

Hello Penelope, thanks and this is nothing more than a list we have complied from press cuttings. We know we have only scratched the surface and that there are many more to add, we need help with this. We will add any institution where there have been allegations of abuse where we have something to back the allegations up. If you can give links to St Christopher’s and allegations of abuse, we shall add it. It’s not sad – hopefully it’s an opportunity to bring more darkness into the light.

      • I have over 4000 photos, many depicting child abuse, starvation and ritual abuse! Many set at St Christopher`s! Will that do? Hardly any of us left alive now!
