Ex-BBC driver David Smith found dead

David Smith

A former BBC driver accused of sex offences has been found dead.

David Smith, 66, from Lewisham, south-east London, had been due to stand trial for allegedly abusing a 12-year-old boy in 1984.

A warrant had been issued for his arrest after he failed to appear at Southwark Crown Court on Monday.

He was charged with two counts of indecent assault, two of indecency and one of a serious sexual offence as part of Operation Yewtree.

Smith was the first person to be charged under the investigation set up to look at abuse claims against the late entertainer, Jimmy Savile.

It was alleged Smith met his victim at a swimming pool, invited him back to his flat where he sexually abused him.

Noticed that all his “convictions” are reported as being against “young boys”. His first conviction is said to date back to 1966, when he would have been 19 and homosexuality was totally illegal. Between 1967 and 1994, if he’d had sex with anyone under 21 he’d be guilty of underage sex. Likewise until 2000 sex with anyone under 19 would have been a crime. I wonder why the media have not made his rap-sheet more transparent. Maybe all he ever did was have sex with men over 16 but under 21.

    • Dear me.

You really are grasping at straws.

How did your Savile walk go ?

If you’ve read the blog you’ll know.
Do you know the details of Smith’s record?
You must at least agree that he could only have been 19 in 1966 when to be a homosexual was automatically to be a sex offender. I notice Joe seems to actually have found out a little more about the background.
Do you have any links Joe?

Sorry, one of the 2002 charges was for gross indecency….but still more serious charges dropped for plea. Only BBC connection in that case was the known ‘contracted driver’ job (couple of years at least and not directly employed by Beeb) and a TV centre visit.

It was confirmed on the news that Smith had a string of convictions for child abuse – 26 I think she said – though nothing seems to be online to confirm it.

Old Bailey convictions in 2002 for indecent assaults on young boys. More serious charges dropped in plea bargain. Got 7 years. Other convictions exist…I don’t have detail. No conspiracy here, just a scumbag.

  4. I just saw this and thought that this is as suspicious as hell. And around the time of other suspicious activity too…
